Water makes sense, but it would actually be more effective to get bags of ice and put the cannisters in them when caught.
Lowering the temperature substantially will slow the rate of chemical reaction and the cannister will likely putter out. Rinse, repeat.
You would actually be prone to thinking (a layman's perspective here) that a completely air tight seal would limit the possibility of any further reaction once oxygen supplies are depleted in the container. Like a fire being snuffed out.
